2026 review
Austin Wells was a modest-power catcher whose contact just did not fall in: he hit .186/.292/.332 with a 26.5 K% and a 12.4 BB% over 388 PA for NYY, with 14 HR, 39 R and 32 RBI across 122 games. Cervical headaches put him on the 10-day IL on Jun 6, he took a rehab assignment Jun 16, and he was activated Jun 21 after missing 15 regular-season days, hitting .166 over 145 AB before the stint and .201 over 189 AB after. Drafted at NFBC ADP rank 227, he finished 791st of 1472 in the TDK LABS 5x5 value rank, 564 spots below, and 29th of 103 catchers. His .281 wOBA ran 19 points below his .300 xwOBA over 388 PA, and his best month was Aug at .246 over 69 AB against .154 over 65 AB in May. The TDK LABS card had flagged his weak contact profile and a platoon limiting his volume back in May, but by mid Sep it was noting a cold stretch alongside a favorable expected-stats line while he held the primary catching job, and by late Sep it described him riding a recent surge behind the plate after a disappointing season.
