Cal Quantrill threw strikes and kept the damage down, but he almost never missed a bat. He signed a minor league contract with TEX on Feb 1, had his contract selected Apr 15, and wound up with a 2.86 ERA and 1.04 WHIP in 110.0 IP across 32 games, with an 18.3 K% and a 5.6 BB% over 443 BF and a 9-5 record. That walk rate was the 42nd lowest of 517 pitchers with 100+ BF, but his 8.0 SwStr% was the 45th lowest and his 24.0 CSW% the 49th lowest, both over 1669 pitches. Drafted at NFBC ADP rank 621, he finished 181st of 1472 in the TDK LABS 5x5 value rank and 23rd of 575 relievers. He moved from the bullpen into the rotation with his first start Jun 23, and the work held up, a 2.57 ERA in 80.2 IP as a starter after a 3.68 ERA in 29.1 IP in relief. His best month was May at a 0.63 ERA in 14.1 IP and his worst Jul at a 4.63 ERA in 23.1 IP, and his 2.86 ERA ran 1.01 below his 3.87 xERA over 443 BF. Right-handed batters managed .193/.232/.305 over 198 PA against him, left-handers .239/.303/.387 over 245 PA. A right lat strain put him on the 15-day IL Sep 20 and he was transferred to the 60-day IL Sep 22, missing 7 regular-season days; by late Sep the TDK LABS card had him shelved with the lat.
