Carlos Vargas missed most of the year and came back into a straight middle-relief job: 16 games, 0 GS, a 4.74 ERA and 1.05 WHIP in 19.0 IP for SEA, with a 21.0 K% and a 4.9 BB% over 81 BF. A right lat strain sent him to the 15-day IL on Mar 24, he was transferred to the 60-day IL that same day and again Apr 8, took rehab assignments Aug 8 and Aug 11, and was activated Aug 21 after missing 149 regular-season days in that stint. Undrafted in NFBC drafts, he finished 471st of 1472 in the TDK LABS 5x5 value rank, 222nd of 811 pitchers, and 150th of 575 relievers. By late Aug the TDK LABS card had him back as a long-relief arm in a straightforward Seattle pen, a middle-relief role without much path to save chances, and by late Sep it was noting his strikeout and walk numbers had come out better than his actual results.
