2026 review

Gus Varland missed some bats but got hit hard when he didn't: his 41.7 Hard% over 108 BBE was the 19th highest of 517 pitchers with 100+ BF, and it showed in a 6.55 ERA and 1.76 WHIP in 33.0 IP over 34 games for WSN, with a 20.6 K% and a 9.7 BB% over 155 BF. He picked up 2 W, 6 SV and 6 HLD against 2 L and 2 BS, with 7 HR allowed in the mix. He was designated for assignment by ARI on Jan 15 and claimed off waivers by WSN on Jan 22, then shuttled between the majors and the minors, optioned Jun 26, recalled Jul 28, optioned again Jul 29, and recalled Sep 23. Drafted at NFBC ADP rank 669, a rare pick taken in only 4 of 674 drafts, he finished 1041st of 1472 in the TDK LABS 5x5 value rank and 519th of 575 relievers. His 6.55 ERA ran 0.43 below his 6.98 xERA over 155 BF. The TDK LABS card had him as the committee's saves leader in early May, called him a thinning TIER-3 piece in late May, noted the option after a rough outing in late Jun, and by late Sep had him back up with a limited save path in a fluid pen.
