2026 review
Jorge Mateo was a speed-first shortstop whose bat never caught up: he hit .203/.245/.314 with a 31.2 K% and a 5.0 BB% over 221 PA across 97 games for ATL and TBR, with 19 SB against 4 CS but just 5 HR and 18 RBI. ATL designated him for assignment Aug 3 and released him Aug 9, and TBR signed him Aug 13, with his last game for ATL Jul 29 and his first for TBR Aug 14. Taken in 234 of 674 drafts at ADP rank 1191, he finished 575th of 1472 in the TDK LABS 5x5 value rank and 31st of 61 shortstops. His .248 wOBA ran 24 points below his .272 xwOBA over 221 PA. The TDK LABS card tracked a real early shift: in early May it noted solid contact and speed establishing usage even amid infield flux, but by mid-May it was already calling him a trap despite the speed. By mid-Sep, with Walls out, it had him as a full-time shortstop whose expected line ran well above his actual despite cold recent contact, and once Walls returned late in Sep it described his playing time path as narrowing, with the speed unable to offset the contact and power floor.
