Payton Tolle was a starter whose results outran his price: a 3.03 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in 148.2 IP over 26 starts for BOS, with a 28.4 K% and 6.6 BB% over 603 BF, 9 W and 6 L. Optioned Mar 23, he was recalled Apr 23 and made his first appearance that day. Drafted at NFBC ADP rank 397, taken in 479 of 674 drafts, he finished 152nd of 1472 in the TDK LABS 5x5 value rank, 245 spots above his ADP rank, and 19th of 236 starters. His 3.03 ERA ran 0.33 above his 2.70 xERA over 603 BF, and he posted a 1.53 ERA in 17.2 IP in Sep against a 4.94 ERA in 23.2 IP in Jul. The TDK LABS card tracked the swings: in early May it flagged a 2.1-mph velocity drop in a loss to Toronto, 95 mph against 97.1 prior, explained away as coming off a 10-day layoff, then by mid-Jun he was off the mound one night before a week where both matchups looked favorable and the underlying profile backed up the surface line. By late Sep the card had him on a run of back-to-back shutouts with a high strikeout rate.
