Shay Whitcomb struggled to make contact and draw walks in a season split between HOU and SFG: a 28.7 K% and a 3.3 BB% over 122 PA, hitting .207/.233/.336 in 116 AB with 4 HR, 2 SB, 9 R and 13 RBI over 49 games and 30 starts. He was optioned and recalled by HOU repeatedly between Mar 23 and Jun 11, then designated for assignment Aug 10, claimed off waivers by SFG from HOU Aug 13, and recalled Aug 24, with his last game for HOU on Jun 10 and his first for SFG on Aug 24. Drafted at NFBC ADP rank 788, he finished 1195th of 1472 in the TDK LABS 5x5 value rank and 46th of 67 third basemen. His .249 wOBA ran 16 points below his .265 xwOBA over 122 PA. By early May the TDK LABS card had him optioned amid a catcher roster swap after a cold start at the plate, with reps at third already crowded before the demotion. By early Sep the card described him as a cold-bat corner infielder whose contact quality outran his results, and by late Sep it still saw him holding a bench role despite the recent slump.
