2026 review

Tomoyuki Sugano was a pitcher who avoided walks but gave up hard, weak-strikeout contact, posting a 5.37 ERA and 1.32 WHIP in 154.1 IP for COL with a 14.6 K% and a 5.5 BB% over 656 BF. His 22.8 CSW% over 2526 pitches was the 15th lowest of 517 pitchers with 100+ BF, his 42.2 Hard% over 521 BBE was the 16th highest, and his 14.6 K% over 656 BF was the 28th lowest of that same pool. He signed as a free agent Feb 10, went on the 15-day IL Jul 4 for back spasms and was activated Jul 18 after missing 17 regular-season days. Drafted at NFBC ADP rank 1012, he finished 1247th of 1472 in the TDK LABS 5x5 value rank and 206th of 236 starters. His 5.37 ERA ran 0.98 below his 6.35 xERA over 656 BF, and he posted a 2.95 ERA in 18.1 IP in Jul against an 8.61 ERA in 23.0 IP in Aug, with a 4.80 ERA in 84.1 IP before the back injury and a 6.04 ERA in 70.0 IP after. The TDK LABS card liked his command-driven scoreless outing in early May, flagged him as a fade by mid Jun, and by late Sep was saying his control was covering up a weak strikeout rate.
